How to Improve Your Penmanship

Learn how to improve your penmanship so it looks nicer and is easier to read. Some people have lovely, flowing handwriting, and others do not, but following these steps helps you learn how to make yours better. Find a style you like, and start practicing.
First: Find your ideal handwriting style
Locate an example of handwriting that you want to emulate, and aim for your own handwriting to someday look like that. This is your objective. Purchase paper for practicing your writing. Choose wide-ruled or narrow-ruled paper, whichever you prefer. Get a pencil or pen that makes writing comfortable for you. Nothing fancy is required here, just something that you prefer using. Remember, to improve your handwriting, you have to keep practicing until it becomes your normal way to write.
Second: Make up a test sentence
Make up a test sentence for practicing your penmanship skills, and write this test sentence at the top of every page. At the start of every week, write your test sentence again, and check your progress.
Third: Start with individual letters
Start with a single letter. Practice this every day, and continue making improvements as you work toward your objective. Focus on the formation of the entire letter, the size of the ascenders and descenders, the tilt of every letter and the starting and finishing strokes.
Fourth: Move on to writing words
After you have mastered writing the individual letters, start practicing whole words. Concentrate on the proper spacing of characters, the flow of letters from one to the other and the amount of room you leave between words. Keep practicing until you achieve the ideal style of handwriting for you.
