Spotlight on Handwriting Without Tears

January 3, 2012

One of the easiest ways to ease handwriting pain is a pencil grip. A pencil grip is a simple, shaped piece of rubber that slides onto the writing utensil. The grip provides a larger object for the fingers to grasp and positions the fingers into the most ergonomic position.

There are many types of pencil grips. Some are triangular in shape, which provides a small amount of finger positioning and some cushioning. Other pencil grips are barrel-shaped and essentially make the pen and pencil fatter and easier to hold. Perhaps the best pencil grips are those that fatten the pencil but also have areas that force the fingers into a more natural, ergonomic position. These are often sold as arthritis or training aids for younger writers.

Writing pain is intolerable at times, and yet writing is such an important element of day-to-day life. Experiment with different pencil grips to see if these can ease your pain.
